One of the great things about outdoor water fountains is that even though they are appealing while running they are still just as majestic when they are not. As the colder months approach, it’s time to consider winterizing any outdoor water feature such as fountains and bird baths.
Though your particular outdoor fountain or geographic area may not receive icy temperatures, it’s important you take care of your fountain during the winter. Most homeowners assume everything will be ok as most fountains are designed to survive the weather outside, but what matters most is what’s happening on the inside. All homeowners need to winterize their outdoor fountain to prevent water from freezing within the pipes, pumps, or bases. Any freezing of water within your fountain can cause permanent damage to it. Follow these quick and easy tips to winterize your fountain so that it last and continues to add appeal to your home.
When it comes to winterizing your outdoor fountain there is no one size fits all methods. If you have a small electric fountain, it’s as easy as unplugging the structure and purchasing a cover from your local hardware store. Once you have removed your fountain from its power source you need to drain all the water out of the fountain. During this step, be sure to pay special attention to any tubings, pipes, and other pieces associated with the fountain where water is involved. Depending on the weather, all water should be removed by November or before icy temperatures settle in. While you’re removing any water from the pieces of your fountain, you should also utilize this time to deep clean the tubes and pumps to get rid of any impurities like debris, algae, and pet dander.
If you have a tiered fountain or a fountain that is made of multiple parts, then it’s best to disassemble your fountain for storage. Some fountains are extremely decorative and may require a lot of effort to put up and put down, so make time to take apart any pieces and allow them to dry before storing. If your outdoor fountain is permanent or made of cast stone, then there’s no need to worry as those cannot be disassembled. Once everything externally and internally is disassembled or removed make sure to continue to clean your pump and make sure everything is dry before storing. Cleaning your pump is important because even microscopic impurities can turn into big problems if left unattended while in storage. Practice cleaning now so your set up is easier when the warmer months start come back around.
Finally, cover your fountain with a special fountain cover or any weather proof cover for any portion of the fountain cannot be taken apart and needs to be protected from moisture. This isn’t necessary for most cast stone fountains, but any other decorative outdoor fountain, visit your local hardware store for a cover that is protective and made of absorbent material so moisture can’t seep through to the inside. Even a waterproof tarp will make a good covering as long as it’s properly covering your fountain so that it’s fully protected.
Once your outdoor fountain is winterized, go back through one last time and make sure everything is squared away. Keep these tips in mind this winter and for the following winters to guarantee you have a well operating fountain for years to come.
